Kolhapur: The purification plant set up near Rankala lake to purify polluted water of one of the several adjacent quarries will be made functional again.
The plant based on hydrodynamic cavitation technology was developed by the scientists of the Institute of Chemical Technology. It was set up near one of the quarries of the lake in 2014 through a private firm. The plant was shut down a few years ago due to the high power bill.
The technology yielded good results, said Aniruddh Pandit, the vice-chancellor of ICT. He visited the site along with the officials of the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation and the Association of architects and engineers on Tuesday.
Ajay Korane, president of the architects and engineers association said, “The power cost is high for running the plant. But we have decided to raise funds through corporate social responsibility to set up a solar power plant of 36 kilowatt capacity to run the plant. The plant has made one quarry pollution free and we are hopeful that it can clean the polluted water of Rankala lake.”
The hydrodynamic cavitation technology involves the formation of cavities or bubbles in the water, which are then subjected to high vapour pressure to break down complex pollutants and organic molecules. The ICT scientists said the technology helps kill harmful bacterial growth without using any chemicals.
