Guwahati: The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) commenced a three-month training program on drone technology specifically designed for junior commissioned officers and personnel of other ranks in the armed forces.
The program aims to enhance aerial defence capabilities while concurrently offering post-retirement career opportunities in the rapidly expanding drone technology sector, as per an official statement from IITG.
Implemented by IITG’s Centre for Educational Technology, Centre for Intelligent Cyber Physical Systems, Centre for Drone Technology (CDT), and the Technology Innovation and Development Foundation, the program is the first of its kind.
Parameswar K. Iyer of the CDT said, “This first-of-its-kind programme will focus on providing exhaustive training on drone technologies, pilot training, software operations, and applications to officers of the armed forces with a mission to revolutionise various operational activities.”
The tailored curriculum will provide participants with the knowledge, perception, and vision required for success in the diverse drone industry or as technology entrepreneurs, Iyer added.
Brigadier Rajeev Kapur, Assistant Director General of the Directorate General of Resettlement, said, “The aim of the armed forces resettlement courses is to enable a smooth transition of service personnel who aspire for a second career in the corporate world at various levels after retirement.”
Thirty officers from various armed forces are currently enrolled in the program, which incorporates theoretical classroom sessions and practical drone handling. The training encompasses robotics, 3D printing, practical flying with instructors, and solo flying.
Brigadier Rajeev Kapur stressed that the program not only expands officers’ understanding of drone technology and its applications in the global environment but also provides insights into the civil domain and familiarises them with the corporate working environment.
