New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. He announced that India will soon launch an AI Mission with the goal of building computing capabilities that are intelligence-related.
The PM expressed delight in India chairing the GPAI Summit in a crucial time when global discussions on artificial intelligence are underway. Acknowledging both positive and negative aspects of AI, he emphasised the responsibility on each nation.
PM Modi highlighted India’s prominent role in AI talent and innovation, showcasing exhibits from the AI exhibition and the YUVA AI initiative, and the youth’s efforts in leveraging technology for social change. The PM discussed the recently launched AI agriculture chatbot, highlighting AI’s applications in healthcare and Sustainable Development Goals.
Modi outlined the government’s initiatives, including the National Program on Artificial Intelligence and the upcoming AI Mission. He stressed the importance of taking AI-related skills to Tier 2 and 3 cities, mentioning the national AI portal, AIRAWAT.
The PM emphasised the need for inclusivity and democratic values in its development, addressing the global impact of AI. He urged the importance of transparency, ethical usage, and making AI transformative, transparent, and trusted. Modi proposed a framework for Responsible Human-Centric AI governance and stressed the need for countermeasures against challenges like deepfake, cybersecurity, and data theft.
Modi called for evidence-based decision-making through data exploration of government schemes, as he addressed stakeholders. He proposed an audit mechanism categorising AI tools based on capabilities and suggested creating a resilient employment mechanism and global AI education curriculum.
Acknowledging India’s linguistic diversity, the Prime Minister suggested using AI to make digital services available in local languages, reviving dormant languages, and preserving cultural knowledge.
The GPAI, a multi-stakeholder initiative comprising 29 member countries, seeks to bridge the gap between theory and practice in AI. India is set to lead GPAI in 2024.
