Pune: KPIT Technologies has introduced India’s inaugural sodium-ion battery technology, after eight years of in-house development. The technology will undergo external testing before commercial use.
According to Ravi Pandit, KPIT Technologies’ co-founder and chairman, revenues are expected within a year post-successful testing, with initial earnings during the testing phase.
Despite the company’s focus on battery technology, KPIT’s primary revenue stream remains software-based solutions for the automotive industry.
Pandit asserts that KPIT is the first Indian and fourth global company with a proven sodium-ion battery storage solution.
The company’s unique hiring strategy for this project involved recruiting electrochemists, a deviation from hiring software engineers. The selected sodium-ion chemistry offers rapid charging in under 30 minutes for shorter trips, boosting cost-effectiveness and making it more appealing for drivers to maximise daily trips.
KPIT aims to provide a sodium-ion battery with up to 30 percent lower overall costs compared to existing alternatives. The company is engaging with current automotive industry clients and those exploring various energy storage applications.
