New Delhi: Airtel and Jio are reportedly planning to discontinue their unlimited 5G data offerings in the second half of 2024. Both telecom giants are poised to implement a tariff hike ranging between five to ten per cent to boost monetisation and revenue growth, according to reports.
Industry analysts suggest that the decision is geared towards enhancing Return on Capital Employed (RoCE) by a minimum of 20 per cent, aiming to recover the increased costs associated with customer acquisition and 5G infrastructure investments.
Standalone 5G plans from Airtel and Jio will make an entry into the market, albeit at a higher cost compared to their 4G counterparts. These plans are expected to provide users with a higher data cap, boasting an increase of 30 to 40 per cent.
Airtel, with a current monthly Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) of Rs 200, is reportedly contemplating a hike to Rs 250. The 5G user base in the country has steadily grown to over 125 million, and both Airtel and Jio aim to expand it to approximately 200 million.
Vi is also expected to introduce 5G services in selected circles. However, there is currently no information regarding the launch of 5G by the state-owned BSNL, which has recently begun rolling out its 4G network in various markets.
