New Delhi: Google has initiated significant layoffs affecting hundreds of employees across its hardware, digital assistant, and engineering teams, according to a company statement. The move is part of Google’s ongoing cost-cutting efforts.
Workers involved in the development of the voice-based Google Assistant and those within the augmented reality hardware team are among those impacted. The central engineering organisation also saw job cuts.
A spokesperson for Google stated, “Throughout the second half of 2023, a number of our teams made changes to become more efficient and work better, and to align their resources to their biggest product priorities. Some teams are continuing to make these kinds of organisational changes, which include some role eliminations globally.”
The affected employees are being informed, and they will have the opportunity to apply for available positions within Google.
The layoffs were initially reported by Semafor for the Google Assistant team and by 9to5Google for the hardware team. The Alphabet Workers Union, representing some Google employees, stated, “Our members and teammates work hard every day to build great products for our users, and the company cannot continue to fire our coworkers while making billions every quarter. We won’t stop fighting until our jobs are safe,” via X.
