New Delhi: The National Council for Educational Training and Research (NCERT) recently introduced the new National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for Class 6, bringing about important educational changes. Under this framework, schools have been guided to dedicate time to vocational education, art education, and physical education and well-being.
Training teachers for the new curriculum
Teachers are getting ready for the updated curriculum. They are receiving training in new teaching methods, curriculum, and assessment techniques through NCERT’s Bridge Month Programme (BMP).
Even though textbooks for the revised curriculum are still being developed, NCERT has started the BMP for Class 6 teachers. Study materials for Classes 3 and 6 will be available by the end of the month, with syllabi and textbooks for other grades coming in later years that will follow NCERT’s guidelines. The council has recommended a two-week foundation program for Class 3 and a month-long bridge program for Class 6, with specific course materials provided.
Student-Centric Learning
The initiatives focus on making learning enjoyable and activity-based for students, reducing the pressure of the curriculum and help students understand better. The guidelines stress on the importance of considering students’ previous knowledge for active learning and effective development of concepts.
The importance of the Bridge Programme
The Bridge Programme is crucial for setting up an engaging classroom atmosphere and introducing the new syllabus effectively. “After students enter Grade 6, the ideal would be to have a month-long, fun-filled series of games and activities that would allow the students to enjoy, interact, shed their inhibitions, speak to other students and teachers, play, and get involved in simple projects (why not a treasure hunt!), etc.,” the guidelines said.
During the Bridge Month, teachers are urged to design lessons that promote active participation and exploration through interactive activities and group discussions. “Subjects are to be seen as interconnected,” the guidelines mentioned, with the objective of developing critical thinking skills and demonstrate the practicality of knowledge across different areas.
