Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has announced a new policy offering free higher education for girls from Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC), and Other Backward Classes (OBC).
The policy, introduced on July 1, 2024, aims to promote educational equality and empower girls from marginalized communities. It will cover tuition fees for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in government and government-aided institutions. Additionally, the policy includes provisions for scholarships, accommodation support, and transportation allowances to ensure comprehensive support for eligible students. This initiative is expected to improve educational access, reduce dropout rates, and contribute to the socio-economic upliftment of these groups.
The government aims to create a more inclusive educational environment, enabling girls from these communities to pursue higher education without financial barriers. This move is seen as a significant step towards achieving gender equality in education and fostering the overall development of disadvantaged sections of society.
