New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved health coverage for all citizens aged 70 and above under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). The move will provide health insurance coverage of ₹5 lakh per year to an estimated six crore senior citizens across 4.5 crore families, regardless of their income or socio-economic status.
Under the new scheme, eligible senior citizens will receive a distinct card for availing benefits. Those already covered under AB PM-JAY will receive an additional top-up of ₹5 lakh annually, specifically for individuals over 70, ensuring they do not have to share the cover with younger family members.
This expanded coverage aims to enhance healthcare access for India’s elderly population, offering comprehensive protection against high medical costs. With healthcare expenses rising, the initiative is expected to significantly reduce financial burdens on families caring for older members.
The decision reflects a broader effort to extend healthcare benefits to vulnerable sections of society and address gaps in senior citizens’ access to medical services, a critical demographic as India’s population continues to age.
