New Delhi: BSNL has launched India’s first satellite-to-device service in partnership with US-based satellite company Viasat. The service aims to provide better connectivity, especially in remote areas of the country. The new feature was showcased at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024 in October.
During the demonstration, Viasat used a regular Android smartphone to show how two-way messaging can work through a satellite connection. Messages were sent via one of Viasat’s satellites, orbiting around 36,000 km from Earth. The technology follows new global standards for non-terrestrial networks (NTN), allowing devices like mobile phones, smartwatches, and even vehicles to connect directly to satellites.
However, neither BSNL nor Viasat has shared specific details yet about when this service will be available, where it can be accessed, or what it will cost. The launch is a major step forward in expanding coverage in rural and hard-to-reach areas, but many practical details are still being worked out before it becomes widely available.
