The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given its approval for the construction of two major hydroelectric projects in the Shi Yomi district of Arunachal Pradesh.
The projects — the Tato-I Hydro Electric Project and the Heo Hydro Electric Project — represent a combined investment of Rs 3,689 crore and aim to significantly enhance the region’s power infrastructure and socio-economic development.
Tato-I Hydro Electric Project
The 186 MW Tato-I Hydro Electric Project, with an investment of Ra 1,750 crore, is expected to be completed within 50 months. The project will generate 802 Million Units (MU) of energy annually, boosting power availability in Arunachal Pradesh and supporting the stability of the national power grid.
The project will be implemented through a joint venture between the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Ltd. (NEEPCO) and the Arunachal Pradesh government. To support its development, the central government will provide Rs 77.37 crore for enabling infrastructure, including roads and transmission lines, and Rs 120.43 crore as financial assistance towards the state’s equity share.
In addition to improved infrastructure, the state will benefit from 12% free power, 1% Local Area Development Fund (LADF), and direct investments in community amenities such as roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, and vocational training centres.
The initiative is expected to create employment opportunities, compensation benefits, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities for the local population.
Heo Hydro Electric Project
The 240 MW Heo Hydro Electric Project, approved with an outlay of Rs 1,939 crore, is also slated for completion within 50 months. Designed to produce 1,000 Million Units (MU) of electricity annually, the project will contribute to improved power supply and national grid stability.
As with the Tato-I project, this initiative will be executed by a joint venture between NEEPCO and the Arunachal Pradesh government. The central government will provide Rs 127.28 crore for roads, bridges, and transmission lines and Rs 130.43 crore for the state’s equity participation.
The Heo project aligns with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, promoting local enterprises and small businesses. It will employ over 600 individuals during its construction phase, with significant indirect job creation in sectors such as transportation, tourism, and small-scale enterprises. Furthermore, operational employment opportunities will arise after the project’s completion.
Regional Impact
Both projects are poised to bring transformative socio-economic benefits to the Shi Yomi district. New roads and bridges will enhance connectivity, while dedicated project funds will be allocated for the development of schools, hospitals, marketplaces, and recreational facilities.
These developments are expected to improve living standards, create a local skilled workforce, and contribute to the overall growth of Arunachal Pradesh, making it a critical hub for renewable energy in India.
