Aizawl: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has appointed Khilli Ram Meena as the new chief secretary of Mizoram. Meena, an IAS officer from the 1993 AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Mizoram, and Union Territories) cadre, recently returned to his parent cadre after serving as an additional secretary in the Ministry of Minority Affairs.
Meena’s appointment follows the retirement of Renu Sharma, the former chief secretary. In the interim, H. Lalengmawia, a senior official overseeing higher and technical education as well as fisheries, was temporarily assigned the role.
According to officials, the Mizoram government had initially recommended Vumlunmang Vualnam, a 1992-batch IAS officer from the Manipur cadre, to take over the position. However, the MHA ultimately selected Meena for the role.
The appointment comes at a critical time for Mizoram, which is navigating administrative transitions alongside broader developmental challenges. Meena’s previous tenure in the Ministry of Minority Affairs involved overseeing key national programs, equipping him with relevant experience to address governance issues in Mizoram.
This decision also reflects the broader practice of cadre reshuffles within the IAS, aimed at addressing administrative needs across states and Union Territories. While the Mizoram government’s initial choice was not approved, the Centre’s final selection underscores its prerogative in determining leadership roles in state administration.m
The new chief secretary’s immediate priorities are expected to include ensuring policy continuity, strengthening state governance, and addressing pressing administrative issues in Mizoram.
