New Delhi: The central government has introduced the Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) feature under the ‘One Nation, One Student ID’ initiative to streamline academic tracking and student documentation across the country. This system is part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and aims to create a simplified and secure method for storing and managing students’ educational records.
-
What will APAAR do?
APAAR will serve as a lifelong identification system for students to keep track of their academic progress from pre-primary education to higher studies. Each student will receive a unique APAAR ID linked to the Academic Bank Credit (ABC), a digital repository that securely stores educational credits and certificates. APAAR has also been integrated with Digilocker, allowing students to access crucial documents like exam results and certifications digitally, reducing the dependence on physical records.

What are the key features of APAAR?
-
Easy enrollment process: Students can register for the APAAR system by providing basic details such as name, age, date of birth, gender, and a photograph.
-
Unique ID for Every Student: Each student will get a unique APAAR ID for storing and managing educational credits and certificates.
-
Academic Credit Transfer: Data stored in APAAR can be migrated seamlessly between institutions when students transfer schools, eliminating the need for physical transfer certificates or documentation.
-
Voluntary Aadhaar Integration: Students will be able to choose to verify their information using Aadhaar, which is used solely for authentication. For minors, parental consent is required for Aadhaar-based verification.

What challenges does the system address?
The system addresses various challenges in the Indian education system including the issue of fraudulent or duplicate certificates. It is also expected to ensure that only recognized educational institutions can upload and update students’ academic data. This feature guarantees that the information provided is authentic, thereby making it easier for institutions, employers, and others to verify qualifications.
