Mumbai: The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced the ‘RuPay On-The-Go’ campaign to promote its National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) for seamless transit payments across India.
The RuPay NCMC aims to streamline payments for public transportation by integrating metro, bus, toll, and parking payments into a single, interoperable system. With its open-loop design, the card supports both online and offline transactions, offering commuters a convenient payment option without requiring internet connectivity.
Currently, the NCMC is operational in major metro cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Ahmedabad, and Kanpur, along with bus services in regions like Mumbai (B.E.S.T), Guwahati, Haryana, Jammu, Srinagar, Himachal, and Aurangabad. By enabling multimodal transit payments, the card addresses inefficiencies in India’s fragmented ticketing systems.
According to Kunal Kalawatia, Chief of Products at NPCI, the initiative aims to simplify everyday commutes and promote digital payments in public transport. The card’s contactless functionality aligns with global trends in transit payment systems, making it a versatile option for daily commuters.
The campaign’s launch comes amid India’s broader push for digital payments in public services. By expanding the reach of RuPay NCMC, NPCI seeks to reduce dependency on cash payments, improve operational efficiency in transit systems, and encourage the adoption of unified payment solutions.
The campaign highlights the growing role of contactless and interoperable payment systems in public transportation, aligning with India’s vision of a unified digital payment ecosystem. Experts suggest that such initiatives could significantly enhance the efficiency of urban mobility while addressing payment-related bottlenecks in public transport infrastructure.
