New Delhi: The Indian government has cleared a Rs 10,200 crore procurement plan for ammunition under the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher system. The decision, approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), aims to strengthen the Army’s firepower amid ongoing border tensions.
Procurement Plan and Contracts
The project includes two contracts set to be signed by March 31, 2025. These involve:
Rs 5,700 crore deal for high-explosive pre-fragmented ammunition.
Rs 4,500 crore deal for area denial munitions.
The ammunition will support the Army’s 10 existing Pinaka regiments, with additional regiments planned for the future.
Pinaka’s Role in Artillery Modernisation
Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Pinaka system is a key part of India’s artillery strategy. The Army has deployed Pinaka regiments in high-altitude areas along the northern borders with China, reinforcing its long-range strike capability.
Pinaka rockets currently have a range of up to 75 km, with ongoing plans to extend it to 120 km and eventually 300 km. This extended range could lead to a reduced reliance on alternative long-range weapon systems.
Strategic Importance
With the clearance of these contracts, the Army aims to improve its precision strike capabilities and enhance operational readiness. The decision comes at a time when India is focusing on self-reliance in defence manufacturing, reducing dependence on foreign arms imports.
The government’s push for indigenous defence production aligns with its broader Make in India initiative, encouraging private sector participation and strengthening the domestic defence industry.
