New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is set to enhance internet connectivity across its network by deploying a 700 km fibre optic infrastructure. The initiative, carried out in partnership with Beckhaul Digital Technologies, aims to strengthen telecom infrastructure, improve mobile network coverage, and support the rollout of 5G services in the capital.
Network Deployment to Begin with Pink and Magenta Lines
According to an official statement, the fibre network rollout will be executed in phases, starting with the Pink and Magenta Lines. The entire project is expected to be completed within six months. The infrastructure will serve as a backbone for telecom companies, internet service providers (ISPs), and data centres, improving digital connectivity in metro stations, tunnels, and underground sections.
5G Readiness and Improved Mobile Coverage
The project aligns with the government’s digital infrastructure initiatives and is expected to play a role in expanding 5G services. A well-integrated metro fibre network will enable high-speed internet access for commuters while allowing telecom providers to enhance mobile coverage in high-density metro areas.
With increasing demand for seamless connectivity, metro stations and underground stretches have faced network congestion issues. The new fibre deployment is expected to address these gaps and offer a more stable internet experience to metro users.
Strengthening Delhi’s Smart City Goals
Beyond commuter benefits, the initiative is expected to support smart city projects by providing a robust digital infrastructure. High-speed connectivity in the metro network could facilitate improved surveillance, real-time monitoring, and better operational efficiency for DMRC.
By leveraging its existing metro corridors for fibre deployment, DMRC is optimizing infrastructure while contributing to Delhi’s larger digital transformation goals. The upgraded network could also support public services that rely on high-speed connectivity.
