Guwahati: The Assam Government has designed a comprehensive roadmap to tackle the challenges emanating from artificial floods. The roadmap further aims to improve Guwahati’s urban infrastructure and enhance the overall water management scenario.
The desiltation exercise as part of the overall roadmap has already started and is targeted to be completed by March. This can help minimise the risks from flash floods which generally take place in April.
The government has formed 21 monitoring committees comprising government officials, ward representatives and local citizens. It was also stated that committees will be guided by the SOP directing them on effective monitoring, including contractors to ensure quality execution.
The town and country planning department is implementing advanced drainage solutions to channelise excess city waters towards the Brahmaputra river.
Agencies like Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and Public Works Roads Department are also leveraging super sucker machines and manually desilting drains after conducting technical studies.
There is work in progress in the Khanpara region to prevent excess rainwater from Meghalaya impacting Guwahati.
