Oxford: The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed a large gathering at Kellogg College at Oxford University on social development and women’s empowerment schemes, particularly in West Bengal.
This address at one of the 38 constituent colleges of Oxford was the centerpiece of the CM’s visit to the UK, which included other discussions on British investments in the state.
The invitation was specifically extended to the Bengal CM by Jonathan Michie, President, Kellogg College and Karan Bilimoria, British Indian businessman and member of the House of Lords.
The Bengal CM emphasized that the Kanyashree scheme started for girls in schools, colleges and universities in the state, considerably reducing the dropout rate. This scheme was recognized by the United Nations and emulated by a host of other states across the country, including Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Jharkhand, among others.
There was a special focus on the 97 social security schemes running in the state. These different schemes addressed a diverse heterogeneous population that included 33 per cent minority communities, 6 per cent tribal population and 23 per cent Scheduled Castes.
The Kellogg invitation was specifically to understand the dynamics of social welfare and development in a state with 100 million and bigger than Britain itself.
