New Delhi: Delhi is set to witness the long-awaited development of the Yamuna riverfront at the site of the former Millennium Park Bus Depot near Sarai Kale Khan.
As reported, the project in Delhi aims to rejuvenate the riverfront with a host of attractions, including a central piazza, a topiary park, a local shopping centre similar to the one at Sunder Nursery, two parking areas and a scenic river promenade, spanning an area of 25 hectares.
The ambitious restoration and rejuvenation plan is structured into 11 subsections, five of which have already been developed. Among them is the Vasudev Ghat, where the newly elected BJP-led Delhi Cabinet visited after assuming office in February.
Other completed sections include the parks on the Asita East and West banks, Amrut Biodiversity Park behind the Commonwealth Games Village and Yamuna Vatika near Rajghat.
While discussions regarding the riverfront project at the Millennium Park Bus Depot have been ongoing for years, it was reported that a detailed blueprint was recently shared with the central government. With approval in place, work is expected to commence soon.
The Yamuna and its floodplain fall under the O Zone, where permanent constructions and concrete structures are generally prohibited under court orders. However, it should be noted that exceptions have been made for major projects, such as the Commonwealth Games Village and flyovers.
The broader rejuvenation project covers 1,660 hectares, incorporating provisions for unpaved walking and cycling tracks across all 11 subsections. A buffer zone of riverine grasses will be planted between the river’s edge and the bund along the redeveloped sections to maintain ecological balance.
Additionally, depressions will be created to store excess water, enhancing floodplain management and sustainability.
