Shantiniketan: The Central Government has appointed agriculture scientist Dr Probir Kumar Ghosh as the new Vice-Chancellor (VC) of West Bengal’s Visva-Bharati University in Bolpur for a tenure of five years.
Ghosh was currently serving at ICAR’s National Institute of Biotic Stress Management at Raipur in Chhattisgarh.
Previously he has worked with the Indian Institute of Soil Sciences, Bhopal and the Indian Institute of Pulses Research, Kanpur.
Born in Murshidabad, Ghosh did his schooling at Bhagirathpur High School and Domkal BT High School. Subsequently, he studied at Visva Bharati University from 1981 to 1985 and then at Uttarakhand’s GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology at Pantnagar.
This incidentally makes Ghosh the first Visva-Bharati alumnus outside the Tagore family to return to his alma mater as the VC.
The university has been functioning with acting VCs since the resignation of Bidyut Chakraborty in November 2023.
