The earthquake, which struck Myanmar and neighboring Thailand on 28 March, caused significant damage to buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. Reports indicate that at least 1,002 people have lost their lives in Myanmar.
In response, India decided to deploy an 80-member contingent of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to aid in relief and rescue operations.
This is the third time India has deployed the NDRF abroad for disaster relief, following previous missions during the Nepal earthquake in 2015 and the Turkiye earthquake in 2023.
As part of the relief efforts, India dispatched 15 tonnes of emergency supplies on Saturday via a C-130J military transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) to Yangon.
India shares a 1,643-km-long border with Myanmar and has consistently extended humanitarian assistance to its eastern neighbor in times of crisis. The swift response under Operation Brahma underscores India’s commitment to regional disaster relief and support.
