New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced a series of reforms, including data integration with the Registrar General of India (RGI) and changes to the voter information slip.
The decisions, which also include the electronic collection of death registration data from RGI, were taken to enhance the accuracy of electoral rolls and make the voting process more accessible.
Since the ECI will now receive death registration data, it is expected to enable electoral registration officers (EROs) to promptly remove deceased individuals from the rolls. This step is expected to streamline the process of roll revision and reduce reliance on individual Form 7 submissions.
Booth-level officers (BLOs) will also verify these updates through field visits, ensuring up-to-date and accurate voter records.
To further aid voters, the ECI has redesigned the voter information slip to prominently display serial and part numbers.
This change will help citizens quickly locate their names and polling stations, while also assisting polling officials in conducting efficient searches during elections.
Additionally, BLOs, the first point of contact between voters and the Commission, will now carry standardised photo identity cards during their door-to-door verification and registration campaigns.
This measure is intended to enhance public trust and facilitate smoother interactions during electoral processes.
These developments align with the vision outlined by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at the recent Conference of Chief Electoral Officers, held in the presence of Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi.
