Asansol: Indian Iron & Steel Company (IISCO) is setting up a new steel plant in Burnpur, Asansol.
Initially, the project will incur a cost of Rs 35,000 crore and employ a workforce of 6000 in both permanent and temporary positions.
This makes it one of the largest core infrastructure projects in recent times in West Bengal.
The new steel plant will be built on 900 acres of land. It will have an annual production capacity of 2.5 to 7.1 million tons of pure, unadulterated steel.
Once completed, this will make IISCO the largest steel factory in India built purely on indigenous technology.
With the project receiving clearance from the Central Pollution Control Board yesterday, the foundation stone will be laid at the end of the monsoons.
The initial groundwork has, however, started. Recently, five cooling towers were demolished to eke out land for the project.
Lands surrounding the factory with illegal encroachments are being cleared. A new flyover has been built for entry and exit to the factory. Even appointments of contract labour have started.
