Pune: The Central and Maharashtra governments have approved Phase-2 of the Pune Metro Rail Project, jointly allocating an estimated Rs 3,626.24 crore for its execution. The expansion will add two elevated corridors Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B) to the city’s existing metro network.
Two new corridors to add 12.75 km metro length
The upcoming corridors are extensions of the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi line under Phase-1. Together, they will cover 12.75 km and include 13 new stations. These routes are designed to serve emerging suburban areas like Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi.
The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro), the executing agency, will oversee civil and electro-mechanical work. Pre-construction tasks, including topographical surveys and design consultations, are currently underway.
Integration and connectivity focus
The metro expansion aims to improve east-west connectivity in Pune, aligning with the city’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP). The Chandani Chowk–Wagholi stretch is expected to support better multimodal integration, especially at the District Court Interchange Station. This station will link Line-2 with the Nigdi–Katraj (Line-1) and Hinjewadi–District Court (Line-3) routes.
The project is also expected to ease congestion on key roads such as Paud Road and Nagar Road by offering alternative transit options for commuters from residential and commercial zones. Notably, the corridors are being planned with intercity integration in mind. Chandani Chowk will serve travelers from Mumbai and Bengaluru, while Wagholi will cater to passengers from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar.
