Darjeeling: Darjeeling Hills got its first engineering college yesterday with the launch of the Darjeeling Hill Institute of Technology & Management (DHITM).
The college was established by the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) in Takdah, about 30 km from Darjeeling town.
The college will be managed by the Bhubaneswar-based Orissa Child Welfare Education Trust.
NHPC funded Rs 40 as part of its CSR to cover the cost of building the infrastructure of the college.
The college has been approved by AICTE as well as the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKUT).
It will offer undergraduate courses in civil, electrical and mechanical engineering, and computer science, apart from AI and ML. There will be undergraduate courses in hotel management too.
The maximum number of seats for computer science and hotel management will be 120. For other courses, it will be 60. 31% seats will be reserved for students from the GTA area.
The academic fee for a paid seat in an engineering course will be Rs 65,000 for a semester. It will range between Rs 11,000 and Rs 14,000 for a reserved seat. The hostel fee of Rs 37,500 per semester will remain the same for all the students.
