Gandhinagar: In a major move to modernise urban sanitation and end manual scavenging, the Gujarat Government has deployed Bandicoot Mobility+, a vehicle-integrated robotic manhole cleaning system, across multiple Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
The initiative is being implemented through the Gujarat Urban Development Mission (GUDM) under the Swachh Bharat Mission’s Emergency Response Sanitation Unit (ERSU) framework.
Technology for Dignity and Safety
Developed by Genrobotics, Bandicoot Mobility+ features a precision robotic arm, robotic legs, HD cameras, gas detection sensors, and a sealed waste collection system. The robot eliminates the need for human entry into manholes, significantly improving worker safety. Its compact, vehicle-mounted design allows it to navigate narrow lanes, making it ideal for India’s dense urban areas.
This technological upgrade is part of Gujarat’s larger ‘ManholeToMachineHole’ campaign, aimed at making the state free from manual scavenging while ensuring safety, hygiene, and dignity for sanitation workers.
Robots Deployed in Leading Cities
GUDM has already deployed the robots in major cities, including Ahmedabad, Surat, and Gandhinagar. These cities have been recognized nationally for their cleanliness and innovation.
Ahmedabad was named India’s Cleanest Big City (population over 10 lakh), Surat ranked second in the Super Swachh League, and Gandhinagar earned accolades in the 3–10 lakh population category.
APAC News Analysis
Gujarat’s deployment of Bandicoot Mobility+ signals a critical shift in how Indian cities are now approaching sanitation, not just as a technical challenge but as a matter of human dignity and systemic reform.
This move also highlights the potential of public technology adoption when aligned with strong political will and a clear vision. Unlike one-off pilots, Gujarat’s structured and scalable model, backed by state agencies like GUDM, showcases how smart governance can drive both social impact and operational efficiency.
As urban India grapples with population growth, waste management, and labor safety, Gujarat’s initiative offers a replicable blueprint for modern, inclusive, and technology-driven urban infrastructure.
