New Delhi: India’s ambitions in telecommunications now stretch well beyond 5G, with the nation setting its sights on capturing 10 per cent of global 6G patents, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2025 on 8 October.
He also projected that the country’s satellite communications (Satcom) market, currently valued at around $4 billion, is expected to surge to nearly $15 billion by 2033.
Addressing the gathering, Scindia said India has transitioned from being a technology follower to becoming a digital leader, driving innovation and self-reliance.
“The day is not far off when people will say the world depends on India,” he remarked, urging the industry to “design here, solve here, and scale for everywhere.”
Highlighting the rapid expansion of satellite connectivity, Scindia said Satcom is extending communication beyond terrestrial networks to the seas and skies, positioning India as a key player in the next phase of digital connectivity. He also emphasised that the country is on track to become the world’s largest digitally skilled workforce.
On the manufacturing front, the Minister credited the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for spurring Rs 91,000 crore in new production, Rs 18,000 crore in exports, and generating around 30,000 new jobs.
“India today is a product nation, distinct from being a service nation,” he added, underscoring the country’s growing role in shaping the global technology landscape.
