Kolkata: Kolkata Municipal Corporation plans to purchase small-sized electric mechanical sweepers to combat air pollution in the city lanes and bylanes.

As per KMC solid waste management department, 20 such machines will be bought for 16 boroughs.

KMC will also procure 20 large road sweeping machines to take care of Kolkata’s worst air-polluted zones.

The machines are likely to reach KMC garages by January. Depending on the efficacy, more such machines could be procured.

Conventional large-sized mechanical sweepers do not work in narrow lanes. Sweeping with hand brooms is inefficient too.

The new machines will be pressed into service in lanes and bylanes located close to major roads identified as most polluted.

These major roads include BT Road, Shyambazar 5-point crossing, APC Roy Road, Chittaranjan Avenue, Jawaharlal Nehru Road, Park Street, Camac Street, Asutosh Mukherjee Road, Hazra Road, Rashbehari Avenue, Gariahat Road, Diamond Harbour Road and Raja Subodh Mullick Road (Jadavpur) among others.
