New Delhi: Stripe and Japan’s NEC Corporation have joined forces to test a face recognition-based payment system that allows users to make transactions without cards, cash, or mobile devices. The collaboration integrates NEC’s biometric authentication technology with the Stripe Reader S700 and Stripe Terminal platform, aiming to simplify and secure in-person payments.
The companies plan to showcase the system at the upcoming Singapore FinTech Festival from November 12 to 14, where visitors can try facial authentication for payments using the Stripe Reader S700. The move reflects the growing industry focus on biometric payments as companies seek faster, contactless, and more secure checkout solutions.
NEC’s face recognition system, which has performed strongly in accuracy assessments by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), will be paired with Stripe’s global payment infrastructure. This integration enables merchants to link biometric verification directly to payment processes, potentially reducing dependency on physical or digital wallets.
The Stripe Terminal platform is already used by businesses to unify online and in-store transactions, offering real-time analytics across markets. The Reader S700, available in 25 countries, supports Wi-Fi connectivity and functions as both a handheld and countertop terminal.
Industry observers note that the partnership between NEC and Stripe represents a broader trend of merging biometric technologies with fintech infrastructure. While the project is still in the demonstration stage, it signals a step toward mainstream adoption of hands-free payments. If successful, the integration could influence how merchants and consumers approach identity verification and transaction security in the near future.
