Varanasi: Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW), Varanasi, has strengthened India’s global standing in railway manufacturing by dispatching the sixth indigenously built 3300 HP AC-AC diesel-electric locomotive to Mozambique on 15 December.

The export is part of a contract for supplying 10 such locomotives, executed through RITES.

Earlier consignments were sent in June, September, October and mid-December this year, marking steady progress in the project. Designed for Cape Gauge (1067 mm) tracks, these locomotives can operate at speeds up to 100 kmph and feature modern, driver-centric amenities to enhance efficiency and comfort.

A production unit of Indian Railways, BLW is emerging as a major export hub, having supplied locomotives to countries such as Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Mozambique since 2014.

The latest shipment underscores India’s growing technological self-reliance and its expanding role in the global railway equipment market.
