Kolkata: The Department of Fisheries will conduct the Marine Fisheries Census 2025 survey on marine fishermen in four districts of West Bengal.
The survey will start this month only in Purba Medinipur, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas and Howrah.
The survey will simultaneously continue in all coastal districts of the country.
The information to be gathered includes the socio-economic conditions of the fishermen, their educational qualifications, professions of family members, duration of their fishing careers and any alternate professions.
The state Fisheries department claimed that the Centre is looking to create an information compendium on the fishermen. This might be used later to declare some schemes or projects.
The Central Marine Fisheries Institute has been entrusted to conduct this census survey.
There will be enumerators enrolled on the Panchayat level to carry out door surveys. They need to have cleared Madhyamik as a minimum requirement and be capable of handling smartphones.
The number of enumerators in each block will depend on the number of fishermen.
Once recruited, the enumerators will be trained by senior officials, after which the survey will start.
