New Delhi: The Winter Session of Parliament is set to commence today, with 15 sittings over 19 days.
The session is expected to focus heavily on legislative business, with 13 significant bills slated for consideration and possible passage.
Among the major proposals listed in the parliament are the National Highways (Amendment) Bill, the Atomic Energy Bill, the Corporate Laws (Amendment) Bill, the Insurance Laws (Amendment) Bill and the Higher Education Commission of India Bill, 2025. These bills cover a wide range of sectors, indicating an agenda aimed at infrastructural development, regulatory reforms, and institutional restructuring.
In the Lok Sabha, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is scheduled to introduce two important financial legislations, the Central Excise (Amendment) Bill and the Health Security and National Security Cess Bill, 2025. Both proposals are expected to spark detailed debate, given their implications for revenue and national welfare measures.
Lawmakers will also take up discussion and voting on the first batch of Supplementary Demands for Grants for the financial year 2025 – 26, a key component of the government’s fiscal planning process.
Ahead of the session, the government convened an all-party meeting yesterday in New Delhi to build consensus and ensure the smooth functioning of both Houses. The meeting, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, saw participation from 50 leaders representing 36 political parties, reflecting broad political engagement before the start of the session.
After the meeting, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the government has sought the cooperation of all political parties to facilitate orderly proceedings.
He reaffirmed that the government is fully prepared to discuss any issue raised by members, provided it aligns with parliamentary rules. The appeal aims to avoid disruptions and ensure a productive Winter Session.
