New Delhi: The Union Government has appointed senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Sanjay A. Lathkar as the Inspector General (Security) in the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). The prestigious post, crucial to the nation’s internal security apparatus, will see Lathkar overseeing the protection of India’s vital atomic and nuclear infrastructure.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment, as per an official order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). Lathkar will serve in this capacity until his superannuation on September 30, 2028.
An IPS officer of the 1995 batch from the Jharkhand cadre, Lathkar hails from Maharashtra. With nearly 30 years of experience in policing, internal security, and administration, he brings a wealth of knowledge and field expertise to his new role. He holds an M.Tech in Environmental Science and Engineering from IIT Bombay, alongside qualifications in Law, Management, Cybercrime, Human Rights, and Criminal Justice.
Lathkar has held several high-impact roles across India, including Superintendent of Police in Latur, Additional Commissioner of Police in Pune City, and Deputy Inspector General in Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). He has also served as DIG and IG in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), leading major anti-naxal and internal security operations in sensitive zones such as Gadchiroli, Ranchi, Nagpur, and Mumbai.
Recognized for his valor and leadership, Lathkar is the recipient of numerous national honors, including the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry, Internal Security Medals, the Chief Minister of Jharkhand’s Gallantry Medal, and multiple commendation discs from the CRPF. His efforts have also earned him accolades from state governments and civil society bodies, including the Mahatma Gandhi Award from the State Minority Commission.
As IG (Security), Lathkar is expected to leverage his vast operational experience and strategic foresight to bolster the safety and resilience of India’s atomic and nuclear assets.
