Kolkata: West Bengal is getting a new sub-division, Farakka, in the Murshidabad district. The State cabinet ratified the decision to create this new sub-division yesterday.

The Farakka sub-division will consist of Farakka, Suti 1 & 2 and Shamsherganj blocks. It will also include the Dhulian Municipal Corporation.

This ratifies the announcement made by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee recently in an administrative meeting in Murshidabad.

To date, these four blocks have been under the Jangipur sub-division. However, as the population increased, there was a need for a new sub-division to manage administration and to deliver citizen services faster.

The new SDO of the Farakka sub-division will be sitting in the Farakka SDPO only. The administration of the Farakka sub-division will be managed from here only.

As of now, the Jangipur sub-division used to have two separate sub-divisional police jurisdictions of Jangipur and Farakka. Now with the creation of the Farakka sub-division, the separate police jurisdiction will also work better.

For the new Farakka sub-division, a total of 109 positions are being created on a contractual basis in the administration.
