Govt Confirms TikTok Ban Remains in Place Amid User Access Reports

Government confirms TikTok ban in India remains in force, dismissing user access reports; app has been blocked since 2020 over national security concerns.

New Delhi: The central government, on 22 August, dismissed speculation that the ban on TikTok had been revoked, clarifying that no order had been issued to unblock the Chinese video-sharing platform.

The statement followed reports from some users claiming they were able to access the platform’s website, though logging in or viewing videos remained impossible.

“Government of India has not issued any unblocking order for TikTok. Any such statement/news is false and misleading,” government sources said on the late evening of 22 August. The app also continues to remain unavailable on official app stores.

It should be noted that TikTok, along with 58 other Chinese applications such as WeChat and Helo, was banned in June 2020 after the Galwan Valley clashes.

At the time, the Ministry of Electronics and IT cited national security concerns, noting that the apps were allegedly collecting sensitive user data and engaging in activities prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India, the defence of India, security of the state and public order.

The recent clarification comes at a time when India and China are taking measured steps to ease bilateral ties.

Both countries have agreed to resume trade through designated border passes at Lipulekh, Shipki La and Nathu La, along with plans to restart direct flight services and update the Air Services Agreement. Visa facilitation for business, tourism, media and other categories has also been agreed upon.

Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also scheduled to travel to China this month to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, where he is expected to hold bilateral discussions with global leaders on the sidelines.
