Dehradun: The authorities of Dehradun Smart City in association with the municipal corporation rolled out QR code enabled garbage collection project in two wards namely; Krishnanagar and Ballupur as a pilot project for better implementation of waste management project.
QR codes are linked to the Integrated Control and Command Centre (ICCC) and would track the GPS enabled vehicle meant for door to door garbage collection. In several cities where garbage collection is done, citizens find it difficult to reach out to municipal authorities with complaints; this initiative would help as a toll free number is given on the QR code to the residents. Ram K, a resident of Krishnanagar says, “Now we feel armed as we can register our complaints and suggestions without going to the office in person.”
A senior official informed that 25,000 QR codes would be placed across the city and the code would help track door-to-door garbage collection. The staff of the sanitation wing is being trained to operate the devise for scanning the helpline QR code on a daily basis to record the daily log of their movement. Complaints lodged at the ICCC would be verifiable using the QR code data. The process of pasting QR codes would be completed b y March 31.
The QR code pasted outside every house will ensure that the sanitation workers have picked up the garbage. It will also throw up information on the number of households covered. Citizens will be able to make e-payments for the door to door garbage collection service.
It may be noted that several cities in the country have ICCC in place which is helping civic officials to deal with problems using technology. The centre has been giving a major push and is allocating funds under Smart City Mission as part of the Digital India agenda.
Officials at the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) feel that the initiatives taken would help in the Swachh Survekshan 2021 rating.
