Kolkata: Twenty-nine teachers of Jadavpur University feature among the top 2 per cent of the scientists of the world in a survey by a research group from Stanford University, said an official of the higher education department on Thursday.
Researchers from the American university have updated the database of top scientists based on their career-long publications through a list published on October 19.
As many as 29 teachers from JU are on the list, the highest among all Indian universities, the official said.
The teachers are from physics, chemistry, mathematics, power engineering and chemical engineering departments, among others.
Amitava Datta, the in-charge of the internal quality assurance cell at JU, said the scientists on the list were among the top 2 per cent of the world.
“JU is followed by Banaras Hindu University with 24 scientists and Delhi University with 18,” said JU vice-chancellor Suranjan Das.
This year’s list has 2,042 names from universities and other institutes in India. Last year’s had over 1,900 names.
Four teachers of Calcutta University feature on the list.
IISc Bangalore ranks first among all institutes in India with 114 names on the list.
“Last year, 30 teachers of the university (JU) had found place on the list. This stellar performance by the university over the past two years goes to show that the university is consistently proving its excellence in the field of science and technology. In the light of this, the UGC must reconsider its recent decision about removing JU from the institutions shortlisted for the institution-of-eminence tag,” said vice-chancellor Suranjan Das.
The secretary in Bengal’s higher education department, Manish Jain, had earlier this month written to the UGC to “reconsider the decision” to remove JU from the shortlist.
VC Das said JU’s standing in the survey conducted by the research group from Stanford showed it deserved the tag of eminence, which will fetch a central assistance of Rs 454 crore over five years if UGC awards the tag.
