New Delhi: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has updated the Aadhaar authentication rules, allowing both government and private entities to use it for service delivery across various sectors. The new rules, notified under the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016, aim to streamline access to services and strengthen digital governance.
Aadhaar Authentication Expanded Beyond Government Services
The amendment, called the Aadhaar Authentication for Good Governance (Social Welfare, Innovation, Knowledge) Amendment Rules, 2025, extends the use of Aadhaar authentication beyond government schemes. Entities in sectors such as e-commerce, healthcare, travel, and hospitality can now apply for Aadhaar-based authentication to improve service delivery.
Officials claim that this move is expected to simplify transactions and improve accessibility, but concerns over data privacy and regulatory oversight remain. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will oversee the implementation, ensuring compliance with authentication guidelines.
Approval Process for Entities Seeking Aadhaar Authentication
Entities interested in Aadhaar authentication must apply through a designated portal, detailing their intended use. Their applications will be reviewed by UIDAI before MeitY grants final approval. Once approved, the relevant ministry will notify the entity, allowing it to integrate Aadhaar authentication into its services.
Government officials argue that this change will enhance efficiency and security in digital transactions. However, experts caution that expanding Aadhaar usage beyond welfare schemes requires strict data protection measures to prevent misuse.
The government’s push for wider Aadhaar authentication comes at a time when digital identity verification is becoming increasingly central to governance and service delivery. While this expansion may improve access to services, its success will depend on robust implementation and oversight.
