Guwahati : The Assam Government plans to denotify three Proposed Reserve Forests in Tinsukia district. These forests include the likes of 170 hectares of Talpathar, 466 hectares of Mohongpathar and 113 hectares of Duarmarah.
What this translates into is that Proposed Reserve Forests are transformed into revenue villages. This will effectively open up the reserved forest area for 20,000 residents who will receive land rights as a result.
The Proposed Reserve Forests impose restrictions on citizens acquiring any land rights on those designated areas.
As per India State of Forest Report 2023, the total area under forest and tree cover in Assam is currently pegged at 30,415.01 sq km. There has been a decrease in forest cover by nearly 84 sq km between 2021 and 2023.
