Imphal, October 15 (APAC Media): The Government of Manipur has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD) to strengthen language technology and expand multilingual digital services across the state.
The MoU was signed on October 14, 2026, during the BHASHINI Rajyam Workshop, Manipur Chapter, held in Imphal.
The workshop was organised by DIBD, under Digital India Corporation (DIC), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), in collaboration with the Department of Information Technology, Government of Manipur.
The programme was attended by Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and brought together government representatives and other stakeholders to discuss the role of multilingual artificial intelligence (AI) in improving access to digital services.
Focus on Language-First Digital Services
The MoU was signed by Amitabh Nag, CEO, DIBD, and Somorjit Salam, IAS, Secretary, Information Technology, Government of Manipur.
The collaboration will focus on strengthening language resources, identifying priority applications and exploring the integration of BHASHINI technologies into government platforms.
A live demonstration of real-time English-to-Manipuri translation highlighted the potential of AI in addressing language barriers. Discussions also covered applications in education, healthcare, legal services and grievance redressal.
Collaboration to Support Regional Languages
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh highlighted the role of AI in promoting linguistic diversity and bringing more of Manipur’s languages into the digital space.
The initiative will involve language experts and local communities in developing and validating solutions that reflect the state’s linguistic needs, including languages such as Manipuri, Tangkhul, Thadou, Paite, Hmar and Liangmai.
The BHASHINI Rajyam initiative aims to strengthen cooperation between the platform and state governments to make digital services more accessible and inclusive.
