New Delhi: Intel has named Lip-Bu Tan as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective March 18, marking a significant leadership shift as the company deals with industry challenges. The decision comes just two months after the departure of Pat Gelsinger, indicating a change in Intel’s strategic direction.
Leadership Transition Amid Industry Challenges
Tan, a veteran semiconductor executive, previously served on Intel’s board before stepping down in 2023. According to sources, Intel’s board approached him in December to take on the CEO role, reflecting an urgent push to revamp the company’s approach in a competitive market.
Intel has faced setbacks in the AI and semiconductor sectors, losing ground to competitors like Nvidia and AMD. The company’s failure to invest in OpenAI in 2018 and delays in AI chip development have put it at a disadvantage. Nvidia’s market cap has surged past $3 trillion, underscoring the growing gap between the companies.
Tan’s return comes after reported tensions with Intel’s leadership over cost-cutting measures and AI strategy. His experience leading Cadence Design Systems from 2009 to 2021, where he focused on customer-driven innovation, could shape Intel’s approach to AI and chip manufacturing.
