Gurugram: IndiGo has appointed retired IAS Vikram Singh Mehta as its new Chairman, succeeding Venkataramani Sumantran, who successfully steered the airline through a challenging post-pandemic recovery over the past three years.
Mehta has been a member of IndiGo’s board and brings a wealth of experience from public administration, corporate leadership, and policy research. A 1978-batch IAS officer, he served in the civil services for two years before starting his career in the private sector.
His distinguished career includes serving on the boards of major Indian corporations such as Colgate Palmolive India, Mahindra & Mahindra, and Larsen & Toubro. Notably, he served as Chairman of the Shell Group of Companies in India and held key leadership roles at Shell in Egypt, heading both Shell Markets and Shell Chemicals.
Beyond the corporate world, Mehta has made impactful contributions in policy and academia. He is currently Chairman of the Centre for Social and Economic Progress and was previously Executive Chairman of Brookings India and a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. Mehta holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, and postgraduate degrees in Politics and Economics from Oxford University and in Energy Economics from Tufts University.
Mehta’s appointment signifies a new era for IndiGo, combining both governance experience and a global corporate perspective.
