Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has decided to install as many as 50 CCTV cameras around the huge expanse of Turbhe landfill area which is spread across 34 acres, along the Parsik Hills, in order to keep a tab on miscreants as frequent fire incidents have been reported over the years. The civic body has appropriated Rs 9.2 lakh for the same.
Meanwhile, a tender has been floated to procure the CCTV cameras. According to NMMC, the project will be completed in the next couple of months. Sunil Lad, NMMC executive engineer (electricity) said, “Providing CCTV cameras at the Solid Waste Management Project site at Turbhe dumping ground has been necessitated due to repeated theft and frequent fires, especially in the night time. The CCTV will also help to keep a vigil on the recently commissioned Construction and Demolition Waste Treatment Project (CDWTP) near the Turbhe landfill area. The tender process will be finalised in the next fortnight which will follow the installation and commissioning.”
The Solid Waste Management (SWM) department of NMMC has started operation of the CDWTP to curb the dumping of construction debris unmindfully across city roads, footpaths and mangrove area along Thane creek and to compete in the Swachh Mission as the cleanest city in the country.A civic officer said that, that many of the citizens, contractors and developers dump debris along roads in the periphery of the landfill area particularly at night which could be checked through the CCTV camera footage once the project is done.
It may be recalled that a major fire broke out at the dumping ground early last month and it took several hours for the fire department to take control of it. There are several slum pockets including the largest slum in the city like Turbhe Store located in the vicinity of the dumping ground and the residents have been complaining about the fire incident that led to pollution and suffocation.
