Amaravati, Apr 7 (APAC Media): Amaravati has been officially designated as the sole and permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh following the assent of President Droupadi Murmu to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026.
The approval was followed by a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, giving the decision statutory backing.
The Act is deemed to have come into force retrospectively from June 2, 2024. It amends the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, replacing the earlier provision referring to a “new capital” with a clear declaration that “Amaravati shall be the new capital.” The term Amaravati includes areas notified under the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority Act, 2014.
The amendment was passed by Parliament last week, with the Lok Sabha approving it on April 2 and the Rajya Sabha clearing it through a voice vote a day later. The move saw broad political support, with most Members of Parliament backing the bill.
The decision brings an end to over a decade of uncertainty following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, when Hyderabad was designated as the joint capital with Telangana for a limited period. Subsequent political shifts had stalled Amaravati’s development and introduced the controversial proposal for a three-capital model.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu welcomed the development, calling it a fulfillment of public aspirations. With legal clarity now in place, construction activity in Amaravati is expected to resume, with the government aiming to accelerate infrastructure development, generate employment, and position the city as a major administrative and economic hub.
