New Delhi, Apr 7 (APAC Media): Indian Railways has approved a series of infrastructure projects worth Rs. 1,364.45 crore aimed at enhancing safety, signalling, and communication systems across its network.
A major highlight is the installation of Kavach, the indigenous train collision avoidance system, on 232 locomotives in Southern Railway at a cost of Rs. 208.81 crore. This initiative is part of the broader “Provision of Kavach with LTE backbone” programme under the 2024–25 Works Plan.
Strengthening Communication Backbone in Northern Region
To improve communication reliability, three projects worth Rs. 400.86 crore have been sanctioned in the Northern Railway. These include the installation of 2×48 optical fibre cable (OFC) networks across Ambala, Delhi, and Lucknow divisions, covering over 3,200 route kilometres. The upgraded network will support advanced signalling systems and ensure seamless data transmission, critical for safety technologies like Kavach.
OFC Expansion in North Central Railway
In North Central Railway, Rs. 176.77 crore has been allocated for laying OFC cables over 2,196 route kilometres. The project covers the areas of Prayagraj, Jhansi, and Agra and is expected to greatly improve communication systems on busy train routes, making train operations smoother and allowing for future technology improvements.
Electronic Interlocking to Improve Signalling
South Central Railway will see major signalling upgrades with Rs. 578.02 crore approved for replacing outdated panel interlocking systems with electronic interlocking at 49 stations. This modernisation, covering Guntakal and Nanded divisions, will reduce manual intervention, enhance reliability, and improve operational safety on busy routes.
Driving Modernisation and Safer Operations
These projects are part of Indian Railways’ broader push toward modernisation, focusing on safety, efficiency, and capacity enhancement. By integrating advanced technologies such as Kavach, robust OFC networks, and electronic interlocking, the railways aim to ensure safer and more reliable train operations across the country.
