New Delhi, Apr 6 (APAC Media): The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has intensified the sale of 5-kg LPG cylinders to improve accessibility and meet rising demand.
These smaller cylinders are available over the counter at LPG distributorships upon showing valid identification, offering a convenient alternative to traditional domestic connections. Unlike the subsidised 14.2-kg LPG cylinders, the 5-kg variants are sold at market rates and do not require address proof, making them especially accessible to migrant workers and short-term users.
The ministry emphasised that there is no shortage of cooking gas or other fuels in the country. On April 4 alone, more than 51 lakh domestic LPG cylinders were delivered, with nearly 95 per cent of bookings made through online platforms. Citizens have been urged to avoid panic buying and rely on digital systems for refills.
Amid concerns arising from the evolving geopolitical situation in West Asia, the government reiterated its commitment to ensuring uninterrupted fuel supply, safeguarding maritime logistics, and supporting Indian nationals abroad.
Efforts to reduce dependence on LPG have also been accelerated through the expansion of piped natural gas (PNG) connections. About 3.6 lakh households have already been connected, with an additional 3.9 lakh registrations recorded since March. Consumers are being encouraged to adopt alternatives such as PNG, electric cooktops, and induction stoves.
On the supply front, refineries are operating at high capacity with adequate crude reserves, while domestic LPG production has been increased. Authorities have also stepped up enforcement, seizing over 50,000 cylinders, issuing more than 1,400 notices, and suspending 36 distributorships to prevent hoarding and black marketing.
