Polavaram (Andhra Pradesh), Apr 8 (APAC Media): The construction work on the Polavaram project, one of India’s largest multipurpose irrigation projects, is progressing at a fast pace.
Located in the Polavaram district of Andhra Pradesh, the project aims to provide water for irrigation, drinking, power generation, and flood management. The irrigation project is a major multipurpose project designed to address the region’s water requirements. Water from the Godavari and Krishna rivers will be utilised for this purpose. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has issued directions to officials to accelerate work on the project.
“Once completed, along with river interlinking, it would benefit the entire state. It is the lifeline of Andhra Pradesh,” Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said.
The key component of the project is the Polavaram Dam, which, upon completion, is expected to be one of the largest dams in India and will feature the world’s largest flood discharge spillway.
The reservoir created by the dam is expected to have a significant storage capacity, enabling irrigation of large agricultural areas and helping to reduce flood impact in the Godavari Delta. Additionally, the project is expected to generate 960 MW of hydroelectric power, contributing to the region’s overall development.
The project introduces a notable feature where power generation will take place even during flood-like conditions. Additionally, even during non-flood periods, water can be supplied to the delta region for irrigation purposes.
The Polavaram project continues to be central to Andhra Pradesh’s efforts to enhance water security and support regional development.
