New Delhi, May 15 (APAC Media): The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), in partnership with Vertis Foundation, launched Project Saksham in a bid to promote women empowerment and sustainable livelihoods.
The programme aims to empower rural women and youth by providing vocational training, employment opportunities and support, for long-term financial independence.
Over 6,000 Youth Trained Under the Programme
According to NHAI, Project Saksham will operate through 12 training centres across the country and train more than 6,000 young people.
Officials said over 4,000 beneficiaries will secure employment in different sectors after completing their training.
The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) said participants placed through the programme are earning average monthly salaries ranging between ₹13,000 and ₹16,000, which is higher than entry-level wages in several states.
Women As Majority Beneficiaries
Women account for more than 80% of the programme’s beneficiaries, highlighting the initiative’s strong focus on gender-led empowerment and economic inclusion.
NHAI said the initiative is part of its broader effort to ensure that communities living along national highways also benefit from the economic growth generated by infrastructure projects.
Focus on Rural Livelihoods and Community Participation
The authority said Project Saksham is helping bridge the gap between infrastructure development and local economic participation by improving access to skills, jobs and financial independence in rural areas.
Field teams associated with the programme work closely with families and communities to:
- Build awareness about vocational training
- Address social and cultural barriers
- Encourage women to join the workforce
- Promote first-time employment opportunities for rural youth
Training Offered in Multiple Vocational Fields
Participants under the programme are being trained in several practical and employment-oriented trades, including:
- Electrical work
- Plumbing
- Tailoring
- Appliance repair
- Nursing assistance
- Multi-skill technician programmes
Officials said the training modules are designed to improve employability in both formal and semi-formal sectors. For many women beneficiaries, the initiative has become an important opportunity for economic independence and social mobility.
