New Delhi, May 15 (APAC Media): In a major step towards promoting clean and sustainable public transport, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has launched a hydrogen-powered shuttle bus service in Delhi’s Central Vista area.Â
The initiative is part of the Government of India’s broader National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), under which pilot projects have been launched to test hydrogen-powered buses on multiple routes across the country.Â

Collaboration Between DMRC and IOCL
The project has been launched through a joint effort involving:
- Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL)
- Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC)
- Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs
- Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas
As part of the initiative, IOCL will provide two hydrogen-powered buses to DMRC. Each bus will have a seating capacity of 35 passengers. Officials said the buses are equipped with GPS tracking and CCTV systems to improve passenger safety, monitoring and punctuality.
Green Hydrogen as FuelÂ
The buses will run on green hydrogen, a clean fuel produced using renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. The process involves using electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission
The hydrogen bus initiative is part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, aimed at encouraging the use of hydrogen-based mobility and clean energy technologies in India.
Last year in August, Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power, informed the Rajya Sabha that 37 hydrogen-powered vehicles, including buses and trucks, along with nine hydrogen refuelling stations, had been approved under the pilot programme.
The projects were sanctioned at a total cost of ₹207.91 crore and are expected to undergo trials for 18 to 24 months. Trials are currently underway in Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala, Odisha, and Ladakh.Â
