Bengaluru: Amazon India is preparing to launch its quick commerce service, reportedly codenamed Tez, as early as December 2024 or early next year. The initiative, focused on delivering groceries and daily essentials, will mark Amazon’s first venture into the quick commerce segment globally, according to sources familiar with the development.
The service will reportedly adopt a dark-store model, enabling faster deliveries through enhanced logistics and inventory management. Amazon is already refining its grocery delivery operations under AmazonFresh to facilitate quicker delivery times, currently ranging between 20 and 30 minutes in select cities.
A recent job posting by Amazon’s grocery and essentials team described the project as a “ground-up initiative” aimed at tapping into the fast-growing quick commerce sector in India. The company has also begun hiring talent to strengthen its efforts in this space.
The quick commerce industry in India has experienced a surge in demand, with leading players like Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, and Zepto collectively generating over $1 billion in revenue in FY24. Competitors such as Flipkart and BigBasket have also expanded their presence in the space, intensifying competition.
Amazon India is expected to leverage both its existing delivery network and external logistics partners to implement the initiative. The company’s recent expansion of its grocery delivery arm to 130 cities, up from 50 a year ago, indicates its preparedness to scale operations for its new service.
The launch comes as the quick commerce sector witnesses rapid growth, driven by consumer demand for faster deliveries across urban markets. If successful, Tez could position Amazon India as a formidable player in this evolving landscape.
